VENN
Marcus, Ken, Mike and Julian
The music of Central France is characterised by the sound of the bagpipe and the hurdy-gurdy, Together they create driving, drone based, melodies - add an artful accordion and the mix is impossible to resist. Brittany’s trance-like music weaves lines of dancers back and forth to mysterious melodies while the cittern and the bass guitar pick out infectious rhythms.
Venn, based in the west of England, play traditional, contemporary and self-penned music derived from these traditions on bagpipe, hurdy-gurdy, flutes, cittern, guitar, mandocello, bass and diatonic accordion.

The Bal starts at 8pm, with Jeudi Matin, our House Band, warming you up for the first half-hour
The guest bands do two spots, and there is an interval,
during which visitors often play a few dance tunes, for your listening or dancing pleasure.
We don't run a bar, so please bring your own liquid refreshment... tea and coffee is available.
We have an optional shared supper from 6.45, so if you'd like to eat with us
please bring some buffet-style food to share, and your own plate & cutlery too.
A Co-op shop is just up the road, open til 10pm.
The programme for 2024
24 February Deux sans Frontières 30 March Venn (from Bristol & thereabouts) 27 April Les Hirondelles (Norfolk&Suffolk) 25 May Anna Pack & Dave Shepherd 8 June Emmanuel Pariselle, Didier & Nathalie Oliver 13 July Bastille Bal avant les vacances… 28 September Oscina Debut at Patcham! 26 October Duo Mistral (On Bouge comes south of the river) 30 November BOF! East Anglian pioneers 28 December Another New Year party! YOU ASKED ABOUT WORKSHOPS...
Sometimes we put on dance workshops, especially if we have guest bands who have new dances for us.... such as when Multiprizh taught us the definitive Dans Leon and Bal Leon, just before Christmas... Other times new people join our club and want to know how to do our general repertoire, such as Chapelloise, two-time bourrées and most especially Mazurka... And even after then, sometimes we want to refresh a specific dance such as the three-time Auvergnat bourrée, Montagnarde or Avant-deux... This year we'll take your email address if you want to be invited to workshops, and then when we have enough people (at least ten), we'll put one on... but in the meantime have a look at our new web page - How to do Bal Folk dances |
